Hear me out on this one. Even though Malcolm is a Death Eater [-1 from Noel] he's well into music.
He plays the piano and violin, like Noel, and a bunch of other stuff [+2 from Noel?].
I'm not sure if Noel would ever find out but if they ever did chance a conversation, Malcolm might let slip that some of his favourite classical composers are the muggle greats [Bach, Mozart, etc] [+2 from Noel?].
Malcolm wouldn't know that Noel's in the Order, and being as his own son isn't a Death Eater, probably isn't overly fussed that Noel doesn't have a Dark Mark.
He probably assumes that Noel supports the regime, and so probably likes the dude, especially because of the music stuff.
I reckon this could lead to a couple of threads, if you're up for hearing them? And, of course, if you think Noel could deal with the fact that Malcolm is a Death Eater...

The music thing would definitely connect them as at least acquaintances. Noel learned from a young age and is teaching his niece how to play piano so even though he wouldn't expect it at first, Malcolm would score a few points with the interest in music. Like I said, Noel is very respectful towards the people he works with to protect himself and his family, regardless of whether they're a death eater. While he's nowhere near Malcolm's social circle, he'd be polite to him. Noel doesn't advertise that he's in the order, and his father works in the Department for Magical Cooperation and is also a death eater, so they might know each other through family connections.
Maybe Noel passes Malcolm's office and hears muggle music playing? Or Malcolm sees Noel playing his guitar somewhere?

Kinda want it to be subtle, how they find out about each other's music. Might also be worth mentioning that Malcolm is good at legilimency, so I think that if they just got talking about music one day, at a Reception event or something at the Ministry, that he'd maybe work out they have a lot in common? There's no way Malcolm would admit he likes muggle music anywhere public...
Anyway, idea for a thread: As a big culture cheese in the Ministry, Malcolm would go to loads of concerts and music events right? I was thinking that if he takes a liking to Noel, that maybe he manages to get him as his security? So I can imagine the Cornfoots having like a family outing [+Tegan, Stephen's gf] and Noel being their sort of undercover auror protection.
Basically Malcolm'd do it as a favour to get Noel into wicked events and buff seats, because Malcolm likes anyone who shares his interests and love of music. What do you reckon?

I love that idea actually. The Fosters and Cornfoots would know each other fairly well I think (well, Noel's father's side anyway, his mother is American and didn't attend Hogwarts), and Noel won't say no to a job even if he had to deal with other pure-blood families.

Do you want to start threading from when they first had a proper conversation? Could do an open thread with a Ministry Reception or something? Possibly a celebration for something? Merlin's birthday? ;]
