play by: Owen Pallett
features:With pale skin, a strong bone structure and a straight nose, Stephen shows his Celtic heritage clearly through his appearance. His eyes, although not a particularly fixed colour, alternate between green, blue and grey. When he was a child, his hair was more red than brown, but as he grew older it became lighter brown. Like his father, he has strong and defined features but he also possesses a softness like his mother, which means he doesn’t look as angry as his Father usually does. Although he isn’t always serious, he often has a solemn expression on his face. He very much looks older than he actually is.
build: Stephen is very tall for his age, at about 5”10, with a slim, slender build. He is not chiselled but has very little fat. Because of this, he appears very lanky, long limbed and sometimes also a little scrawny. He attempted sports in his third year to try and gain some muscle, at his father’s request, but found that it wasn’t for him. It helped that he overheard a comment made by Tegan that she thought men with muscle looked ridiculous.
distinctions: None
style: Stephen has a smart-casual kind of average dress sense. He’s not one for smart suits, or wizarding robes, but he does like to make himself look presentable. Most of the time, he is neat and tidy and looks clean, which he hopes impresses the ladies. He’s not fond of slobs or poor hygiene and so his clothes are nearly always clean. The colours he wears are usually dark and he’s not seen in neons, or brights- definitely not fuchsia.

adores:
- Music - Violin and piano are his favourite instruments and Stephen was taught to play both from a young age by his Father. His favourite style is classical but, when his Dad isn’t listening, he’s attempted adding a bit of jazz and rock’n’roll to his compositions.
- Reading- Stephen is nearly always found with his nose in a book. He tends to stick to books written by wizards and witches, but has once or twice delved into muggle literature, mainly out of curiosity. He wasn’t so impressed with them, and reckons that he can probably write better novels.
- His Mum - although he loves his Dad, Stephen prefers his Mum and really gets along well with her. They are of a similar mindset and enjoy the same things. His Dad is a lot harsher and strict, and so Stephen thinks he can be an idiot sometimes, and should just lighten up.
- Charms - this is Stephen’s favourite class and he loves practising and modifying spells. He enjoys being creative and any subject which lets you use your imagination is a good thing where Stephen is concerned. Stephen likes reading and researching Charms the most out of all his subjects.
- Politics – Stephen knows that the Ministry of Magic is important in how the magical community functions and so he takes an interest in how it conducts itself. He finds the dynamics between different groups and creatures interesting, and wishes that there was a political based subject at Hogwarts which taught the ins and outs of the Ministry and its history better. Stephen has his own ideas of how the Ministry should organise their community, and is itching for the opportunity to voice them.
- Tegan - She has been his best friend since he was about a year old and they have always gotten along well. They are, in essence, childhood sweethearts. When Tegan started at Hogwarts they drifted apart a little, but since the Yule Ball in Stephen’s fourth year this changed [more on this in History]. Though they have no lessons together, they spend countless hours out of classes sitting together and Tegan is attempting to get Stephen in with her circle of friends. Stephen has always been close to her and, when she developed, well…let’s just say that suddenly cooties were a lie and lip gloss on your cheek wasn’t uncool.
abhors:
- Disorder – To be productive, Stephen needs to be in a calm and relaxed environment. If things are too messy, noisy, or tense then it tends to stem the creative juices and this is one of few things that really stresses Stephen out.
- Pork. It’s gross. And Haggis. That’s gross too. Cabbage could probably do with a revamp as well, because Stephen thinks that’s also rather disgusting.
- Potions- Nothing to do with Snape, but Stephen’s too creative and ends up overdoing it. He doesn’t like having to follow the instructions to a T and ends up having to get extra help to make sure that his grades don’t slip. Because of this he resents the subject and the practice in general.
- House rivalry- His parents were in different houses and they ended up working out their differences and getting married, so Stephen doesn’t understand what the big deal is with House rivalry. It’s his opinion that people are too complicated to fall into one of four groups and he sometimes gets frustrated when people place a lot of importance on the different Houses.
- Quidditch – Watching 14 people flying around on brooms chasing balls isn’t Stephen’s idea of a fun afternoon. He thinks it’s boring and he’d rather spend his time doing something constructive.
weakness:
- Bad perception – Stephen isn’t very good at reading people and their emotions, which can make him awkward.
- Outcast – Stephen is quite unconventional. His idea of fun doesn’t always correspond with the norm, and he has a tendency to focus on uncommon topics for discussion. He gets this from his Mother who was a dreamer, and as a result doesn’t have a large circle of friends and isn’t overly popular or ‘cool’.
- Easily distracted – A messy room, a stressful or tense atmosphere, too much noise; these are all things which throw Stephen’s focus and concentration off. If there’s any bad-feeling in the house or in his dorm at Hogwarts, then he can’t get his work done.
strength:
- Intelligence, wit and creativity
- Laid back – When it really comes down to it, Stephen’s quite an easy-going character. He’s happy with his own company, and whilst he knows that he has faults, he’s not too worried about them.
- Introspective – Stephen doesn’t take things at face value, he’s very open minded and understands that everything is interlinked and complex.
boggart:
- The Dark Lord and all the trouble he could cause Stephen and his family if Malcolm got on the wrong side of him
- Achieving nothing in life
- Peacocks
amortentia:
- Shortbread
- The parchment the Ministry uses
- Tegan’s perfume
mirror of erised: Become the Minister of Magic and have a happy family of his own
veritaserum: During the summer before his third year Stephen made friends with some muggles in the nearby village to the Lighthouse. [More on this in History]
patronus: Eagle
dementor: A particularly bad argument between his parents when Stephen was a little boy
overview: Being an only child, Stephen grew up to be a bit of a loner. Even though he spent a lot of time with other kids from other families, there aren’t too many people that Stephen really felt he could connect to. As such he can find it difficult to get his meanings across or to understand people’s emotions. He’s very much happy with his own company, and doesn’t mind spending days tucked away silently in his room. Stephen doesn’t demand too much from people and is very respectful of others. He’s not overly confident, but he’s not always a complete recluse either and with people he’s known for a long time then he can actually be quite sociable.
Stephen enjoys being creative and if he can’t let his imagination run wild then he starts to feel awkward and unhappy. He very much thinks outside of the box, sometimes a little too far, and he finds that if he’s too open with his thoughts then people get cautious around him, so he’s often closed about what he’s musing over. He can be particular and difficult about his surroundings and if things are too hectic or stressed then Stephen closes up and gets awkward. He’s not really known to get angry, although he has had quite a few arguments with his Dad over the years. These are usually quickly resolved, and Stephen’s not the sort of person to hold a grudge.
Thanks to his Dad’s influence, music is a big part of Stephen’s life and he loves going to concerts [of the orchestral kind] and enjoys composing his own pieces. The fact that he can’t play music whilst he’s away at Hogwarts annoys him, and he sometimes gets restless about it, especially as there’s no easy way to even listen to music. He’s not really confident about his singing voice, and shied away from the School’s choir. Stephen’s tried his hand at art before, but he’s not as good at drawing and he doesn’t like to show anyone his sketches, though he enjoys going to art galleries with his family. Really, the only creative field [apart from magic] which Stephen gets a chance to explore is the literary one. He writes short stories and poems, inspired by the books he reads and also by general observations of the world and his classmates.
When Stephen was younger his Mum introduced him to the world of divination. Whilst Stephen didn’t get too much out of it and isn’t very good at practising that sort of magic, he was fascinated with his Mother’s seer abilities and remains intrigued about that subject matter. He’s not quite as abstract as his Mother can be, though he’s not dismissive of the art. In fact Stephen is very open when it comes to magical theory and appreciates the fact that many subjects overlap. His open mindedness makes him intelligent and gives him a strong understanding in the field of magic, and he is a skilled wizard.

mother: Enid Cornfoot née Finley
father: Malcolm Cornfoot
siblings: N/a
extended: Jonathan Cornfoot, uncle; Duncan Cornfoot, paternal grandfather;
monetary: Rich/Upper class
overview: When little Stephen Cornfoot emerged into the big bright world, there was a great sigh of relief. He was the second child to Enid and Malcolm Cornfoot, a couple who had still been grieving over their first stillborn child. Having faced the difficulties of trying to conceive and of pregnancy, Enid decided that Stephen was enough and he grew up as an only child. Whilst his Mother devoted her love and life to him, his Father was more reserved. Having been raised in a traditional, old-fashioned family, Malcolm was strict with Stephen, and less open, showing less affection than Enid.
Having said this, Malcolm loved Stephen, and was quick off the mark to teach his son music. By the age of six, Stephen could already play happy melodies on his violin and was quickly learning to play the piano also. In the meantime, Enid was home-schooling Stephen, teaching him the three Rs and also introducing him to the world of divination.
The Cornfoots were quite a sociable family, and as they were very close to the Malfoy family, Stephen became close friends with the Malfoy children, Draco and Tegan. Even though Stephen was the same age as Draco, they didn’t get along so well and Stephen found himself having more interesting playtimes with Tegan who was a year younger. As they grew older, Stephen came to regard Tegan as his best friend.
Whilst Stephen was growing up his parents were somewhat competitive over trying to guess which Hogwarts House he would be sorted into. His Father was determined for his son to be like him, in Slytherin, whilst his Mum was certain that he was witty and pensive enough to be a Ravenclaw like her. The contest ended when Stephen was 11 and finally got to Hogwarts, where he was swiftly sorted into his Mother’s old House.
Even though he was placed into a House of like-minded people, Stephen didn’t really hit it off with anyone and didn’t make too many friends to begin with. Whilst he could be funny and quite sociable, he was very much the observer posted on the outside. This didn’t bother Stephen too much as he didn’t think it was incredibly important to be popular, however this changed in his second year when Tegan Malfoy started at Hogwarts. On the way to school that year Stephen was sat in a train compartment with Tegan on the Hogwarts Express, excited about the prospect of having a close friend at school with him. His hopes of companionship were quickly dashed when Tegan was sorted into Slytherin and promptly made her own friends in her House. Following this Stephen made more of an effort to try and get himself noticed, but to no avail and soon gave up, returning to his reclusey ways whilst grumbling about the stupidity of House rivalry.
During the summer between his second and third year, Stephen made some unlikely friends. Whilst playing in some fields near his house he bumped into some muggles and quickly realised just how harmless they were. Having been raised by his Father to believe that muggles were inferior but dangerous, Stephen soon made up his own mind and found that actually they were quite nice. Careful not to give anything away about his true identity and the fact he was a wizard, he found himself enjoying the time he spent with his new friends. He didn’t feel like he was losing his magic by being near them, and he was actually surprised just how much he had in common with them. One of the girls which he met was a fellow musician and Stephen found himself sneaking off to her house during the summer days to play music with her more often. Just when it seemed like a romance was brewing, however, Stephen’s Dad found out about his little trips and put a stop to them, threatening to attack the muggle girl and her family if Stephen saw her again. Stephen was miserable for a while, but had known that he wouldn’t be able to keep it up. After a few deep conversations with his Mum about it, he soon got over it and was off to Hogwarts again before he knew it.
Stephen was a bit of a dreamer and didn’t fully apply himself to his work at the beginning. The only subject which the imaginative and creative little Stephen really seemed to excel in from his first year was Charms. In his fourth year, when Professors started harping on about OWLs, Stephen got his act together and started trying a lot harder to do well. Whilst he’s not the top in all his classes, he’s usually at the top end of the achievements list, except for Potions, which he’s quite dreadful in [though not quite as awful as Harry or Neville].
It wasn’t just his academic side which bloomed in fourth year; Stephen also became more confident and plucked up the courage to ask Tegan to the Yule Ball with him. It was then that Stephen discovered his romantic side, treating Tegan to the most beautiful evening a boy of 14 could manage. Whilst they had a happy evening, their romance was overshadowed by stress from home. With Harry Potter dead and both their Fathers members of the Death Eaters, things got pretty complicated and whilst they managed to see each other, nothing really progressed.
To begin with, Stephen was unconvinced with the Dark Lord rising again, and was unsure about it being a good thing, especially when it seemed to cause so many arguments between his parents. However as the regime grew more stable and things started to settle more, Enid calmed and so did Stephen, though there is still some leftover animosity between Stephen and his Dad. The whole ordeal made Stephen feel as though his own Dad was a stranger, and he feels like he needs to get to know the man better.

secret phrase: Fight it out
sample: [Taken from another site]"Well, yeah...hopefully...but not until we're older," said Stephen, admitting it reluctantly. At 16, the idea of a wedding was pretty naff. Stephen wanted to at least finish school before he even thought of proposing to Tegan. Being married and being at school would be really odd, and it was just unnecessary.
He looked up at his cousin and decided that it would probably be safer to try and change the topic. Knowing Sep, if they were still talking about it when Tegan came back, he'd end up offending her somehow and things would get complicated.
"Anyway, if that's how you look at life then you might as well drop dead now. That's natural and happens eventually too. But life is about living and learning and love is-" ...about romance?
'Shut up Stephen, you're being a massive loser ' he hissed to himself. He already scolded himself for saying the L-word in front of Sep. He liked his cousin a lot, and didn't want him to think Stephen wasn't cool. Not that Sep was cool in the conventional sense, but Stephen did kinda look up to him. He cleared his throat and carried on talking.
"Wasn't sure if you were going to come today," he said feebly, glancing around the room, desperate for something else to talk about. His eyes landed on his Dad who had pretty rosy cheeks from too much drink, and was leaning a little too heavily, clutching the back of one of the arm chairs to stop himself from falling to the floor. "Bet Dad was happy to see you."
